ITX Associates

At ITX we are experts at identifying and eliminating threats from your PCs, but why should such a service be necessary when we have anti-viruses and security suites?

Most computers have security software installed to protect against virus and other malignant agents but modern malware authors are familiar with all standard protection systems and constantly evolve new techniques to distribute malware. Worst still, organised crime has realised that theft via computer carries little or no risk and can potentially infiltrate your computer stealing credit card numbers, bank passwords or other information. The simple fact is, anti-virus and security software does not stop malware. Obviously it helps. Think of it as locking your front door, it won't stop every housebreaker, but it stops most.

Hidden Threats

Today's threats are ever-changing and very sophisticated. Modern viruses can be Polymorphic or Metamorphic - both of which present problems to virus-scanners. Polymorphic viruses infect their host with an encrypted copy of themselves, which they then decode with a polymorphic decryption engine that ensures this 'new' virus is dissimilar to its source or sibling infections, making it virtually impossible to detect directly using a known signature. Metamorphic viruses take this a stage further and rewrite themselves completely each time they are regenerated.

Rootkits

Rootkits are malware which take administrative control of an infected host. A typical Rootkit will take control of the host operating and then hide their presence. As they have full control of the operating system, they can do this with ease concealing processes and hiding files from anti-viruses and other monitoring programs. Rootkits typically will also include a Trojan or Backdoor Trojan in their makeup, making them the most dangerous computer threat

Trojans

Trojans are 'harmless' programs that hide another function. They may act as a downloader, downloading hidden programs, commands or scripts. Often they will disable protection systems leaving the computer system completely open to unauthorized access. The worse kind, the backdoor, will allow direct access to a PC and may be used to steal personal information including logins and passwords for online bank accounts.

Of the machines we check, over 80% have some form of infection, and virtually all have a firewall and anti-virus. The only secure PC, is one that is checked by an ITX-pert regularly.
