The Risks of the Internet Part 2
In the last part, we looked at the nature of Internet threats. In part 2 we start looking at methods of defending ourselves from them. Your best  method of protection is a knowledge of the dangers so  you can respond accordingly.
Infections can be picked up pro-actively or passively. A Proactive infection is like a burglar - it breaks into your PC, whereas a passive infection is like a guest - invited in; it may "steal your keys" and come back later, but it starts with an invite.
In this article, we'll look at passive infection and  protection against it, and cover proactive infections when I talk about firewalls and software updates.
So how do you get infected? Easy, trust, lack of knowledge or inappropriate activity.  The commonest vectors are eMail documents, Filesharing and Attack Sites

The risks of the Internet - Part 1

Over the next few weeks we are presenting a series of articles on basic computer security for home and business users. This week we're going to take a very basic look at the risks from the Internet and over the next few weeks we'll look at methods of reducing those risks. In this article, we'll just give an overview into the issue.  The major risk to most users is malicious software or Malware. You've probably heard the terms Virus, Worm, Trojan etc; all of these are common types of malware. I'm not going into the difference between them at this time as that is outside the scope of this article.  So, why do people create malware? Essentially for three reasons, to disrupt or destroy, to steal something, or to take control.

Microsoft Update KB977165 triggering widespread BSOD

MS10-015: Vulnerabilities in Windows kernel

On some systems the above update has been observed  to render the updated system unbootable .

The problem is caused when a TDSS infection exists on the system prior to the update. It can be repaired by replacing  atapi.sys with a clean version via the recovery console.
